As well, in preparation for creating my own branding mockups for the historical client project, I completed a practice mockup so I could better learn the tools and techniques that would aid me to create a better final mockup for my project. After opening up Photoshop I chose a soda mockup template. After this, I went to “dafonts.com” and was looking for a font that was somewhat whimsical, I decided to go with “Marola.” I then imported that font into Photoshop and used it for my mockup. I wrote “COSMIC SODA” in large dark purple lettering across much of the top half of the soda can so that it would be where the eye is first brought to. I also added a drop shadow. I made the background behind these words a much lighter purple for high contrast between the two. After this I wrote “BEST SODA IN THE UNIVERSE” and “500 ml” in the same “Marola” font; this time in a slightly lighter purple than the background. I also added a dark drop shadow to the lettering. To add more areas of interest to the soda can I decided to add information on the type of flavour of soda it was. I started by using the ellipse tool, holding down shift to ensure not to skew the circle, and placed it in the top left. I then added a drop shadow to it, changing the direction to match that of the drop shadow on the lettering “COSMIC SODA.” After that I found an image of cherries and turned it into a png and placed it within the circle. I then used the colour overlay feature, choosing a slightly darker, more grey purple than the background colour and turned it up to 100%. Over top of that I inserted more text and wrote “BLACK CHERRY FLAVOUR” in the same “Marola” font. I chose the same light purple colour as the text at the bottom of the can. I also added a slight drop shadow on that text as well.
I stuck to a pretty monotone theme of purple for my soda can mockup as I thought it best fit the aesthetic I was looking for. Most soda cans are largely the colour of their flavour as they can then be easier to spot if someone is looking for lemon flavour (usually yellow). Knowing that my soda would be black cherry flavoured I tried to stick to purples. I also tried to use purples that appeared refreshing and pleasant, as you are trying to sell a soda that presents itself as flavourful and enjoyable and want the colours used in packaging to reflect that experience. Overall, I am very happy with how my soda mockup turned out. The spacing, colours, and complete aesthetic is something that I am proud of, especially as it is my first time using a mockup. This has also definitely better prepared me for the historical client project branding work.
